Luteolin – What It Is and How It Could Benefit Your Health

luteolin in sweet peppers

Luteolin is a natural yellow-colored flavonoid/flavone with antioxidant and antiinflammatory effects. Luteolin is found in many different plant-based vegetables and fruits, other foods and spices.

Dietary sources include but are not limited to apples, carrots, broccoli, fresh peppermint, thyme, chamomile tea, olive oil, oregano, sweet peppers, and celery. You can also get luteolin extract supplements.

If available, look for liposomal or nanoparticle forms for better absorption and utilization in the body.

In the world of natural remedies, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioners have used some of these plant sources and other herbs to treat everything from high blood pressure, acute lung injury in sepsis, pancreatitis, arthritis, and various other inflammatory conditions to certain colorectal, breast, and lung cancers.

Animal studies suggest that luteolin may lessen lung injury in experimental bronchopneumonia by modulating a specific biological mechanism. Additional studies hint at the possibility that luteolin, among other flavonoids, may be useful in blocking the ability of the COVID-19 virus to get into the cells of the body.

Luteolin may also work synergistically with another flavonoid, quercetin, to support better health.

Interestingly, luteolin may also act as a natural type of protector of brain function. it may help lessen the severity of “brain fog,” the brain fuzziness and mental confusion that people with conditions like fibromyalgia or mastocytosis often experience.
